China issues 2012 crop protection targets
China's Ministry of Agriculture has issued its key targets for crop protection work in 2012. One of its core aims is to keep the crop loss ratio caused by instances of plant diseases and insect pests under 5% for the country's “main” crops (wheat, rice and maize). The Ministry expects that crop pests and diseases will affect over 500 million ha of crops in 2012, an increase of more than 20 million ha over last year. The projected increase is attributed to changes in farming methods and predicted adverse climatic conditions. China has over 1,700 crop health concerns, of which more than 830 are due to insects and 720 due to to diseases ( Agrow No 603, p 19).
