Portuguese agchem residue violations on 3% of samples
Fewer than 3% of analysed foodstuffs in Portugal were rated to be pesticide residue non-compliant in 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture says. The Ministry found that 27 of the 715 fruit and vegetables and two of the 13 babyfood samples contained residues above maximum residue levels (MRLs). There were also 17 samples of processed products tested, and a further seven of cereals, or 752 samples in total. Only 22 of those 29 samples showing residues above MRLs were categorised as infractions. The full findings were that 382 or 51% of the 752 samples contained no residues, another 341 (45%) had residues below MRLs, and the remainder (2.9%) were above MRLs.
