Chinese butachlor production dips in H2 2011
China's production of the herbicide, butachlor, amounted to 12,369.3 tonnes in 2011, reports the China Crop Protection Industry Association. The majority of annual production occurred between January and June, with some 9,530.3 tonnes manufactured in the first half of the year, accounting for 77% of the total. Production saw a large dip in May last year, and by July had averaged out at only around 500 tonnes per month. Chinese butachlor manufacturers attributed the drop in production during the second half to several factors: butachlor's main use is on rice crops for which pesticide demand falls in the second half; the flooding in South-East Asia during 2011 that adversely affected exports; and Thailand's introduction of a new pesticide registration system, which required companies to re-register products.
