EU approves food/feed use of four GM soybeans

The European Commission has granted EU approval for the food and feed use of four genetically modified soybean lines. The authorisations cover: new approvals for Bayer CropScience’s glufosinate herbicide-tolerant LibertyLink (A5547-127), DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International’s dual herbicide-tolerant Optimum GAT (356043), and Monsanto’s insect-resistant MON87701; and renewal of the approval for Monsanto’s glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready (40-3-2). The approvals run for the standard ten years. The Commission went ahead with its proposed authorisation after the EU regulatory committee and an appeal committee were unable to reach the majority vote needed to accept or reject the GM lines ( Agrow No 633, p 9).
