EU plant research network launched
A European Commission-funded network co-ordinating plant science research across Europe has been launched. Participants include 17 EU member states, Canada, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and the US. The network will pool resources and expertise to fund research programmes looking at global challenges, including food security and sustainable bio-energy. The network (ERA-NET for Co-ordinating Action in Plant Sciences - ERA-CAPS) will be co-ordinated by the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Around 85% of public funding for research is via national research activities. Wider and deeper co-operation between nations is important to ensure that research is focused and duplication can be avoided, the BBSRC points out. The Commission is contributing €4 million ($5.2 million) to develop and support the network.
