FVO calls for further Peru agchem control improvements
Peru’s official controls on pesticides have improved over the past few years, but authorisation of pesticide products and checks on formulations do not ensure effective control, the EU Commission’s Health and Consumers directorate general’s food and veterinary office (FVO) reports. However, comprehensive self-regulation of controls by growers largely provides assurance that fruit and vegetables that are intended for export to the EU. That is reflected in the small amount of EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed notifications there have been since 2008. The FVO’s comments follow a study it carried out in Peru in November 2011 on controls of pesticides in food of plant origin heading to the EU.
