Monsanto settles long-running dispute

Monsanto has agreed to pay over $80 million for a 30-year medical screening programme to residents of the US town of Nitro, West Virginia to settle a long-standing dispute over health problems linked to the operations of a chemical plant 40-60 years ago. The plant was owned and operated by the former Monsanto owner Pharmacia and later by a Solutia/Akzo Nobel joint venture. Monsanto assumed certain liabilities related to the Solutia business after being spun off from Pharmacia in 2000.
