Origin expects Chinese OK for GM maize in 2013

Dr Han Gengchen, president of the Chinese agricultural biotechnology company, Origin Agritech, predicts that China will approve the commercial production of genetically modified phytase maize by 2013, according to media reports. Dr Han was reportedly speaking at a transgenic crop press conference in Beijing earlier this month. The deputy director of China's national agricultural transgenic biosafety committee, Huang Dafang, countered by saying that the time-scale for domestic commercialisation of GM crops is “difficult to predict”.
