Australia OKs Pioneer's GM canola tests
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) concludes that planned field tests of DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant canola pose negligible risks to human health and the environment. The canola expresses the gat4621 gene from Bacillus licheniformis ( Agrow No 629, p 22). The company plans to test the crop in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia between May 2012 and February 2016. The tests will cover a combined area of 512 ha on up to 68 sites. A risk assessment and risk management plan is open to public comment until April 10th.
