Chinese cotton area to fall 6% in 2012

China's cotton area is expected to decrease by 6.1% this year to 5.1 million ha, reports the Chinese newspaper, the AgriGoods Herald. The report cites figures from the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, which surveyed 2,962 cotton growers in 16 provinces across China. Some 58.4% of growers expected to plant the same acreage of cotton as last year, an increase of 5.3 percentage points on 2011, while 10.4% planned to raise their cotton acreage (-26.6 percentage points) and 30.6% expected to plant less (+21.6 percentage points). China's cotton area was 5.4 million ha in 2011.
