EU GMO cultivation proposal stalls again

Plans to allow EU member states to block the cultivation of approved genetically modified crops have stalled again after EU Environment Ministers could not agree on a compromise proposal in March. The compromise, put forward by the Danish EU Presidency, suggested that countries could strike deals with applicant companies to exclude their territory from commercialisation plans ( Agrow No 634, p 8). However, progress was blocked by around five member states, which maintained their original objections that the plans conflict with the EU’s internal market rules on free trade.
