US EPA mulls fluxapyroxad exemption
The US EPA is considering an application from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) for an emergency exemption to use BASF’s unregistered fungicide, fluxapyroxad (trade-marked as Xemium), on rice. The LDAF says that the fungicide is needed to control sheath blight ( Rhizoctonia solani), which causes losses of 21-27% and up to 50% for very susceptible rice varieties. The exemption would cover up to 40,000 acres (16,188 ha) of rice for 2012. The EPA has proposed the approval of fluxapyroxad on a range of crops, but not rice (see this issue).
