EFSA rejects Austrian GM potato ban

Austria has not provided adequate scientific evidence to support its ban on the cultivation of BASF’s genetically modified improved starch Amflora potato, concludes the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The potato line gained EU cultivation approval in 2010 ( Agrow No 587, p 12). Within a few months, Austria notified the European Commission that it was invoking the safeguard clause under EU GMO legislation to ban the line.
