EFSA identifies assessment approach for protected crop agchems

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has identified the protected crop systems that require the development of specific methods to assess pesticide emissions, and outlined the approach to be used. Its latest scientific opinion is the result of a project initiated in 2008, in response to EU member state comments that current guidance only relates to crops in open fields ( Agrow No 590, p 9). Soil-bound cultivations in walk-in tunnels, as well as both soil-bound and soil-less cultivations in greenhouses, are a priority, as emissions may differ substantially from those in open fields, the EFSA concludes.
