Imazapyr-tolerant maize for Kenya
Seed developers have produced a herbicide-tolerant maize soon to be launched in Kenya African newswire IPS reports. Scientists from the Mexican-based International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, the Weizmann Institute and BASF have developed the imazapyr-tolerant maize line, UaKayongo (Swahili for “kill Striga weed”) as the fruit of ten years’ co-operation. The herbicide is used to control the parasitic weed, Striga spp. The seed will be coated with the herbicide as part of the package. BASF supplied R&D resources and technology to its StrigAway production system consisting of imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant maize hybrids to CIMMYT and African based researchers last year ( Agrow No 618, p 5).
