Cane agchem depot for Brazilian smallholders
A depot/warehouse/depository for the sale of pesticides to benefit around 12,000 small- and medium-sized sugar cane operations has been set up in Brazil. The Pernambuco state sugar cane supplier association, the AFCP, through a grower co-operative, the COAF, is behind the move. It seeks to enable the marketing of pesticides at differentiated prices. The co-operative will be able to store more pesticides at the depot than it could purchase from local suppliers, so enabling it to supply farmers more cheaply. The AFCP says that the storage was built with the environment in mind. It is also considering using the depot between growing seasons for storage of products for use on cassava. The depot is located at the AFCP’s offices in the state capital, Recife, and was opened earlier this month.
