EFSA clears Monsanto's dual-trait cotton

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that there are no safety concerns regarding Monsanto’s application for EU approval of food and feed use of its genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant and insect-resistant Bollgard Roundup Ready (MON531xMON1445) cotton. There are two applications: one to market food and feed products derived from the cotton; and one seeking renewal of approvals granted under previous EU GMO legislation to food and feed additives produced from the cotton. The EFSA’s opinion will go forward for consideration by the European Commission. Separate applications to renew food and feed approvals for the individual traits were cleared by the EFSA earlier this year for MON1445 ( Agrow No 632, p 8) and last year for MON531 ( Agrow No 625, p 19).
