Brazil soy farmers win Monsanto royalties injunction
Soybean farmers in Brazil have won a class action seeking an injunction against the charging of royalties by Monsanto for its genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans in Brazil. The 15th Civil Court of Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul found for five farmers’ unions from Passo Fondo, Sertao and of Santiago. It granted an immediate injunction against the collection of all royalties on GM soybeans produced in Brazil. Failure to comply would lead to a daily fine of R$1 million (US$547,000). The ruling was made earlier this month.
