China to implement strict paraquat controls

China is taking steps to restrict the production and use of the herbicide, paraquat, in a move that it hopes will help “protect the health and safety” of its citizens. No new approvals will be granted for the production of paraquat “mother liquid” (active ingredient plus additives) or to aqueous formulations and processing plants. New applications for paraquat field tests as well as pesticide registrations and production licences for aqueous and other liquid formulations will no longer be processed. Paraquat is China's third-largest herbicide in terms of annual production volumes, behind glyphosate and atrazine ( Agrow No 634, p 17).
