Intacta soybean decision referred to EU appeal cmt
A decision on whether to approve Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant MON87701xMON89788 soybeans in the EU has been referred to an appeal committee. The move follows the failure of EU member states in the regulatory committee to reach the majority vote required to back the approval. Monsanto is seeking registration for import, processing and use in food and feed of the GM line, which is due to be commercialised in Brazil as Intacta in autumn 2012 ( Agrow No 624, p 2). The European Commission proposed approval after MON87701xMON89788 gained safety clearance from the European Food Safety Authority ( Agrow No 635, p 8). The appeal committee considered four other GM soybean lines earlier this year, but was unable to reach a majority vote, leaving the Commission free to go ahead with the approvals ( Agrow No 633, p 9).
