EU approval for two biocides
The European Commission has confirmed biocide approvals for two active ingredients for non-crop use. Margosa extract is approved as an insecticide/acaricide and methyl nonyl ketone as a repellent. The decisions were cleared by EU Ministers earlier this year ( Agrow No 635, p 8). The ais will be added to Annex I of the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8) on May 1st 2014, to allow national regulatory authorities and companies time to adjust to the approval conditions. The EU approval only covers margosa extract from the kernals of Azadirachta indica extracted with water and further processed with organic solvents. Member states must check that approvals are subject to appropriate risk mitigation measures to protect surface water, sediment and non-target arthropods. The EU assessment of methyl nonyl ketone was based on indoor use by non-professionals. When considering approval applications, member states will have to assess any other uses or exposure scenarios not addressed by the EU assessment.
