Australia approves Pioneer's GM canola tests
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved an application from DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International to conduct field tests on genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant canola. The canola expresses the gat4621 gene from the bacterium, Bacillus licheniformis. The company plans to test the crop between May 2012 and February 2016 over a combined area of 512 ha on up to 68 sites. In February, the OGTR concluded that the proposed tests posed negligible risks to human health or the environment ( Agrow No 635, p 16).
