EFSA refutes French call for MON810 ban
France has not provided sufficient scientific evidence to support its request for an EU ban on the cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). France submitted its request to the European Commission in February, seeking an emergency measure under Article 34 of the EU GM food and feed Regulation (1829/2003 – Agrow No 635, p 10). At the time, the Commission noted that no action would be taken before the EFSA had assessed the submission and other member states had been consulted. France subsequently imposed its own temporary ban on MON810 cultivation in March ( Agrow No 637, p 11).
