EFSA advises tougher agchem tests on bees
Improvements need to be made to the EU risk assessment of the effects of pesticides on bees, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). A scientific review carried out by the Authority has found “weaknesses” in the current assessment, as it does not fully cover several exposure routes, sub-lethal doses and long-term effects. The EFSA’s opinion will be used as the basis for developing specific guidance on assessing risks to bees from pesticide use. The document will provide advice to industry and regulatory authorities when active ingredients are reviewed under the EU agrochemical registration Regulation (1107/2009).
