USDA funds more pest control projects

The USDA has allocated $50 million to support 321 projects to help prevent the introduction or spread of plant pests and diseases threatening US agriculture. The funding for fiscal 2012 is provided by section 10201 of the 2008 Farm Bill. The projects to be funded include: biological control of brown marmorated stink bugs ( Halyomorpha halys) in five states; a survey of walnut twig borers ( Obera linearis) and thousand cankers disease ( Geosmithia morbida) in 17 states; a survey of sudden oak death ( Phytophthora ramorum) in 11 states; a khapra beetle ( Trogoderma graniarum) survey in 19 states; and a national honey bee survey.
