More EU funds to find links to bee losses
The European Commission is to provide €3.3 million ($4 million at the current rate) to support research on the reasons for the loss of honeybee colonies. The funds will support surveillance studies in 17 EU member states until the end of June 2013. The work is in response to a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) project in 2009 that highlighted a lack of data throughout the EU on the extent and reasons for colony losses ( Agrow No 583, p 7). Pesticides are among several possible factors suggested. The EFSA recently proposed improvements to EU requirements for assessing pesticide effects on bees (see this issue).
