New wood preservative nears EU approval

EU Ministers have cleared proposals to award EU approval to N,N-didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDA carbonate) as a wood preservative. Swiss chemical company Lonza applied for approval under the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8) in 2007 as a new active ingredient. The proposed approval states that the ai would not be permitted for use on wood that will be near water or continuously exposed to the weather, unless further data are submitted to demonstrate safe use. The decision requires formal adoption by the European Commission. The ai is scheduled to be added to Annex I of Directive 98/8 on February 1st 2013.
