US extends data protection for mesotrione
The US EPA has granted Syngenta a third year of extended exclusive data use for its herbicide, mesotrione, until June 4th 2014. The Agency can extend the original ten-year exclusive use period for up to three years under an incentive provided by the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act. A one-year extension can be gained for every three minor-use crops registered. The third extension for Syngenta was due to approvals for okra and blackberries, the company notes. It gained a two-year extension in 2010 ( Agrow No 596, p 10). Syngenta introduced mesotrione, as Callisto, in the US for use on maize in 2001 ( Agrow No 378, p 21).
