Mexico approves Monsanto RR soybeans
Mexico has approved the commercial release of Monsanto’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans (MON04032-6 in Mexico) for use on 253,000 ha. The Ministry of Agriculture authorisation came earlier this year and covers seven states. The approval is the first for GM soybeans. Only field trials and intermediate, pre-commercial stage pilot plantings had previously been undertaken in Mexico. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service notes that the approval comes “at a politically sensitive time”, with rising resistance to the technology in the country, and imminent elections for a new government.
