Intacta soybeans approach EU import approval
The European Commission is free to go ahead with its proposal to approve Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant MON87701xMON89788 soybeans for import after continued indecision among EU member states. In June, an appeal committee returned the same “no opinion” vote as given by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in May. The 149 votes in favour, 87 against and 109 abstentions were not enough to accept or reject the proposal. The soybean line was given safety clearance by the European Food Safety Authority in February ( Agrow No 635, p 8). It is approved in Brazil and is due to be commercialised as Intacta this autumn ( Agrow No 624, p 2).
