Embrapa GM beans to be royalty free

Farmers in Brazil will not be paying royalties for use of genetically modified feijao beans, newspaper Gazeta do Povo reports. The Brazilian agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa, is to discard the payments system used for soybeans for its GM golden mosaic virus-resistant (EMB-PV051-1) beans, it told the newspaper. The beans will be in its multiplication phase by 2014, when the corporation will set a payment system that “will allow farmers access to the technology without increasing their costs”.
