EFSA clearance for Syngenta's Viptera maize

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given a positive safety assessment for Syngenta’s genetically modified insect-resistant MIR162 maize trait. The company has applied for EU approval for import, processing and use in food and feed. The EFSA’s opinion will go forward for consideration by the European Commission. The GM line is sold as Agrisure Viptera and produces the Bt Vip3Aa20 toxin for the control of a wide range of pests ( Agrow No 617, p 22). MIR162 is only to be available in combination with other insect-resistant traits. It holds approvals in Brazil, Argentina, the US and Canada, and import approvals in Japan and Mexico.
