US OK for Syngenta's GM maize RIBs

Syngenta has received US EPA approval for refuge-in-a-bag (RIB) versions of its genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant Agrisure 3122 and 3220 maize lines. They will be introduced for the 2013 season. Agrisure Viptera 3220 E-Z Refuge provides dual modes of action against above-ground pests with a 5% blended refuge. It combines Syngenta’s MIR162 ( Bt Vip3A toxin), Bt11 (Cry1Ab) and Dow AgroSciences/DuPont’s Herculex 1 (Cry1F). Agrisure 3122 E-Z Refuge provides dual modes of action against above- and below-ground pests. It combines Bt11, MIR604 (mCry3A) and Herculex Xtra (Cry34Ab1 + Cry35Ab1 + Cry1F). Both lines are tolerant to the herbicides, glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium. Non-RIB versions were introduced last year ( Agrow No 627, p 25).
