US NMFS finalises "unique" BiOp
The US National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS) has finalised a “unique” biological opinion (BiOp) on the risks of the herbicide, thiobencarb, to endangered salmon in California. The NMFS concludes that the herbicide may adversely affect but is unlikely to jeopardise three listed salmon populations or adversely modify their designated habitat. It is the sixth BiOp issued to the EPA as part of a legal settlement with environmental and fishing groups covering four western states. The BiOp also covers the herbicide, molinate, but its approval was cancelled in 2008 and the NMFS/EPA consultation process is moot.
