EFSA assesses Italian insecticide/bee study

An Italian research project on the effect of insecticides on bees has raised some potential concerns, “suggesting that a change in the assessment of the substances, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, imidacloprid and fipronil, as regards their effects on bees, might be required”, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The concerns include lethal effects on bees exposed to dust from seed treatments, sub-lethal effects, and interactions between clothianidin and pathogens, the Authority adds. However, it also says that it was not possible to draw a definitive conclusion, due to deficiencies in study design, statistical analysis and data reporting.
