US exemption for Certis biopesticide

The US EPA has granted an emergency exemption to allow the use of Mitsui & Co US subsidiary Certis USA’s biopesticide, BmJ WG ( Bacillus mycoidesisolate J), to control potato virus Y in seed potatoes in Montana. The Montana Department of Agriculture had applied for an exemption to use the product on up to 2,675 acres (1,083 ha - Agrow No 642, p 15). BmJ WG induces systemic acquired resistance to the aphid transmitted disease. Last year, Certis reached a global licensing deal with Montana State University to commercialise a B mycoides-based biopesticide ( Agrow No 630, p 4).
