US EPA to OK Syngenta's Duracade maize
The US EPA has proposed the approval of Syngenta’s genetically modified insect-resistant Duracade (5307) maize. Duracade expresses the Bt eCry3.1Ab toxin for the control of corn rootworms ( Diabrotica spp). The Agency recently extended an experimental use permit for Syngenta to test the maize in combination with other GM maize lines until December 31st 2013 ( Agrow No 640, p 12). Syngenta plans to stack Duracade with its Agrisure Viptera (MIR162 – Vip3Aa20) and Dow AgroSciences/DuPont’s Herculex RW (DAS59122 – Cry34Ab1 + Cry35Ab1) in the refuge-in-a-bag product, Agrisure Viptera 3222 E-Z Refuge, which is expected to be introduced in 2014 ( Agrow No 630, p 22). The approval decision for Duracade is open to public comment until July 25th.
