Bollgard I cotton to debut in Paraguay

Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard I cotton (MON531) will be available for commercial planting this year in Paraguay. The plant health and seed quality service, the Senave, has registered the cotton in its national commercial cultivar register, the RNCC. It recently declared that it could not add Bollgard I to the RNCC as two of the five requirements for registration were incomplete ( Agrow No 643, p 21). They were the opinion on food safety from the Ministry of Health and the environmental licence from the Ministry of the Environment. The Ministry of Agriculture approved Bollgard I last year, setting a 20% non- Bt cotton refuge area and recommended post-market monitoring to be carried out by Monsanto.
