Moscamed opens sterile mosquito plant
The Moscamed Commission has opened a Brazilian facility for raising genetically modified sterile male mosquitoes for combatting the spread of dengue fever. The evaluation of UK pest control company Oxitec’s (Abingdon, Oxfordshire) mosquitoes is being carried out by Moscamed and the University of Sao Paulo in collaboration with Oxitec and the Bahia state government. Production was switched from the UK to Brazil in 2010, and the first outdoor release took place last year. The researchers claim that the incidence of dengue mosquitoes ( Aedes aegypti) has fallen by 85% in trial areas.
