MEPs declare EU patent change illegal

Moves by EU heads of state to make late changes to proposals on an EU-wide patent would “infringe EU law” and make the rules ineffective, warn members of the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee. The changes were put forward by the European Council at the end of June and would reduce the power of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to enforce the patent ( Agrow No 644, p 10). The Committee held its first discussion on the issue in July, after the European Commission initiated an assessment of the legal implications of the changes.
