Brazil soy area to jump 10% plus
Soybean planting intentions in Brazil are hitting unprecedented levels for 2012/13, Reuters reports. High and rising commodity prices are attracting farmers’ attentions. Prices have so far peaked at an all-time high above R$80 (US$40) a bag at Brazilian ports this month. Brazilian consultancy AgRural anticipates a 27.5-28 million ha area. That would be at least a 10% rise on last year’s barely 25 million ha crop ( Agrow No 626, p 20). Another research body, Agroconsult, predicts a 29 million ha area. Planting is due to commence in September.
