USDA deregulates GM sugar beet again

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has deregulated Monsanto/KWS Saat’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready sugar beet for the second time. The move follows a 30-day public comment period on the final plant pest risk assessment and environmental impact statement, which were issued by the APHIS last month ( Agrow No 642, p 15). The APHIS previously deregulated Roundup Ready sugar beet in 2005 but that ruling was overturned in 2009 following a lawsuit by law firm Earthjustice and the Center for Food Safety on behalf of organic crop growers and consumers ( Agrow No 577, p 18).
