France formally bans thiamethoxam
The French Minister of Agriculture, Stéphane Le Foll, has signed an order allowing a ban in France on treating oilseed rape seeds with the insecticide, thiamethoxam. Towards the end of June, the Minister withdrew the approval for Syngenta’s seed treatment, Cruiser OSR (thiamethoxam 280 g/litre + fludioxonil 8 g/litre + metalaxyl-M 32.3 g/litre). His decision followed the opinion of the national agency for health security, the Anses, on a study modelling the effects of the behaviour of foraging bees under low-dose laboratory administration of thiamethoxam ( Agrow No 643, p 9). Mr Le Foll has urged for an EU-wide ban on the active ingredient as he has not received any response from the European Commission on his similar plea made last month.
