Flufenoxuron gains EU biocide approval

Flufenoxuron has been granted EU biocide approval for use as a wood preservative. However, the approval is for only three years, rather than the standard ten, because the active ingredient is persistent, liable to bioaccumulate and toxic. Applications for products based on the ai will also be subject to a comparative risk assessment to check if safer alternatives exist. Flufenoxuron was supported by BASF through the review of existing ais under the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8). It failed to gain biocide registration for insecticide/acaricide use earlier this year ( Agrow No 634, p 9).
