ECHA gears up for new biocides role
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is being allocated 100 staff to work on biocides activities, including the registration of non-crop pesticides. Funding for the posts was released when the new EU biocidal products Regulation (528/2012) came into force in July ( Agrow No 644, p 10). The Regulation will be implemented in EU member states from September 1st 2013. The number of ECHA opinions on biocide approvals is expected to increase from 80 in 2014 to 300 in 2020, says the European Commission. The Agency is also developing new IT tools for the industry to use as part of the registration process.
