Indian state bans Mahyco Bt seed sales
The Indian state of Maharashtra has forbidden Monsanto licensee Mahyco from carrying out any trading activity in the state, domestic media report. The order essentially prohibits the company from selling Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton seed. The state’s director of inputs and quality control, who issued the order, reportedly stated that Mahyco was indulging in unfair trade practices, including supplying sub-standard quality seeds to cotton farmers and creating an artificial shortage of seeds to encourage black marketing. The prohibition order came after the company could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the allegations.
