Pannar/Pioneer deal to up maize seed prices claim
A South African economist claims that the proposed DuPont seed subsidiary DuPont Pioneer majority acquisition of the South African seed supplier, Pannar Seed (Greytown), would lead to a 12% rise in maize seed prices. The companies agreed a deal two years ago for Pioneer to acquire a majority holding in Pannar ( Agrow No 600, p 3). But it took a failed bid by the Competition Commission to block the deal, and two subsequent appeals, before authorisation was granted earlier this year by the Competition Appeal Court (CAC - Agrow No 641, p 3). However, the Commission has since applied for leave to appeal that decision to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
