India to set up new crop protection institute

India’s Union Cabinet has approved the Ministry of Agriculture’s proposal to establish the National Institute of Biotic Stress Management at Raipur during the country’s 12th five-year plan (2012-17) at a cost of Rs 1,211 million ($22 million). It will be set up as a deemed university with four schools focusing on: crop health management research; crop health biology research; crop resistance system research; and crop health policy-support research. The mandate of the Institute would include creating novel mitigation measures to biotic stresses in agriculture and carrying out research on the multiple causes that causes biotic stresses.
