India to set up new agbiotech institute

India’s Union Cabinet of Ministers has approved the Ministry of Agriculture’s proposal to establish the Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology at Ranchi during the country’s 12th five-year (2012-17) plan at a cost of Rs 2,875 million ($52 million). It will be set up as a deemed university with five schools focusing on: genomics; bioinformatics; genetic engineering; nano-biotechnology, diagnostics and prophylactics; basic and social sciences and commercialisation. The mandate of the Institute would include: undertaking research to develop crops with traits such as increased yield, or increased tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress; and designing academic programmes to develop the highly trained personnel required for fundamental research in agricultural biotechnology.
