EU mulls end of bifenthrin as non-crop insecticide
The European Commission has proposed that bifenthrin should not be granted EU approval for non-crop use as an insecticide/acaricide. The active ingredient is already approved as a wood preservative ( Agrow No 610, p 11) and the latest proposal comes despite its recent reapproval as an agricultural insecticide ( Agrow No 645, p 10). Bifenthrin has been evaluated as part of the review of existing biocides under the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8) and is being supported through the review by FMC. The assessment identified an unacceptable risk for aquatic organisms, says the Commission, which is proposing a phase-out by May 1st 2013. It circulated its proposals to EU Ministers at the end of July. The ai’s agrochemical approval is for seven years, and is conditional on the submission of additional data and a monitoring programme.
